Invasion Season 3 brings together a global cast to fight back

You’re forgiven if you had not been keeping a close eye on Invasion, which, despite being an Apple TV+ marquee series, has, so far, operated in the shadows of two of the platform’s other tentpole shows: Silo and Foundation. It has its fans, and the concept itself is appealing, but the consensus has been rather lukewarm, especially among viewers who were quick to criticize its (purposefully?) slower burn during the first half of season 1. Even among those who have become devotees, the word “love/hate” has come up in more than one retrospective.

There is still no shortage of praise to go around, though. The photography and visuals have been stunning throughout, and there’s no question that the team behind Invasion has been willing to take more risks and go for larger, deeper themes, even when the execution doesn’t entirely land. The latest trailer for season 3, which Apple TV+ dropped in early February, suggests that the third installment might just hit its stride.

The brainchild of David Weil (Hunters) and X-Men franchise veteran Simon Kinberg (producer/writer on The Martian, Oscar nominee), Invasion’s main hook has long been interesting to audiences: an alien invasion, seen through the eyes of regular people from all over the world. Some of the dialogue is even in Japanese and Pashto, with English translation subtitles. One of the earliest buzzwords was “intimate,” and, indeed, Invasion has not shied away from dwelling on character dynamics and emotional connections, more so than its title would imply.

Season 1 focused on the first glimpses of the extraterrestrial threat, and it was only in the final episode that the full alien invasion was made inevitable. The second season had a completely different approach and tone: more action, more kinetic energy. The evolution of the alien threat in season 1 was also mirrored by the evolution of the cast, adapting to life on a planet that has completely changed, sometimes overnight, thanks to alien incursions. Small groups of humans have been corralled into protected “safe zones,” and even there, survival of the fittest sometimes requires difficult choices.

Season 3 to Feature Cast Members Joining Forces Against Evolved Aliens

Season 3 will pick up two years later and, as suggested by the new trailer, the alien threat has “evolved.” That’s also the case with the human characters, which, according to the official summary, “will now collide for the first time as the series goes global.” That means a gathering of the main Invasion players: individuals from all over the world (Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America), who were previously stranded on different continents, will team up on a dangerous mission in order to break into the alien mothership.

Those aliens have reached their “apex” form, and we first see them in the new trailer lashing out from the ship with deadly tendrils that land quickly and move fast. The team will need every ounce of their skills, intellect, and determination if they are to give humanity any chance of survival. On the human side, new bonds will form, even among those who have become a family, and old relationships will likely crack under the pressure of this high-stakes mission.

Joining returning cast members Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik, Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato, Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole, India Brown as Jamila Hudson, Shane Zaza as the less-than-popular tech entrepreneur Nikhil Kapur, and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans is a new addition to the main cast: Erika Alexander, who will be seen in regular capacity as a yet-unnamed character.

On the creative front, season 3 has the potential to be the first season of Invasion that finally feels complete in the resolution of both character arcs and story arcs. Longtime viewers and newcomers both should expect to see their investment in the Invasion universe pay off, with the increased action and alien-fighting sequences that we have all been waiting for since the first trailer.

Will Invasion finally be able to bring the noise and convert new viewers in the process? It’s too early to tell, but the preview and the new season description at least indicate that the series is continuing to refine its voice, rather than retreating to a more cautious approach. There’s a good chance the third season of Invasion will appeal to fans of global sci-fi sagas that dare to get dark, delving deep into both action spectacle and rich human stories.
