Ryan Coogler Teams with Marvel Again for Ironheart
Ryan Coogler has been rolling this year, with his most recent film, Sinners, just making a big splash at the box office. And that’s not all for the movie director — he’s already coming back to work, as Marvel is giving him the reins to Ironheart, its upcoming limited series.
The studio just dropped a new teaser trailer for the project, which will premiere in June 2025.
Marvel’s Ironheart stars Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, an MIT student and Ironheart from the comics. The original version of the character is a protégé of Tony Stark, a character in whom Coogler has shown interest. The series, which is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will consist of six episodes and will be the last television series to arrive as a part of MCU’s Phase Five.
Ironheart was first announced way back in December 2020 with a 2023 release date. But in March 2023, Marvel made a strategic shift to avoid over-saturating the market with the sheer number of shows and movies they were planning. As a result, the premiere of the MCU series was pushed back to the summer of this year. Footage from the 2024 D23 Expo revealed that the project will be “a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center.” The implication is that it will be darker and more grounded than the majority of MCU shows.
Riri Williams was introduced to viewers in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. At MIT, Riri had created a vibranium detector while in school. She came into conflict with Namor and his blue-skinned forces after Wakanda was invaded, as she was determined to stop the violence. During the film, Riri developed a friendship with Shuri, based on their shared interest in science. Riri eventually constructed an armored suit with similar capabilities to Iron Man’s to assist Wakanda. When the fighting ended, she returned to MIT, but was forced to leave the suit with Wakandans.
A Conflict Between Science and Sorcery
The show picks up just after the conclusion of Wakanda Forever. The official synopsis teases the premise: “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka ‘The Hood’ (Anthony Ramos).”
A diverse cast has been attached to the project. Lyric Ross will play Natalie Washington, Riri’s best friend. Alden Ehrenreich will be Joe McGillicuddy, Manny Montana will play Cousin John, Matthew Elam will be Xavier Washington, and Anji White will be Ronnie, Riri’s mother. A new face for the MCU will be Shea Coulée as Slug. Returning to the franchise is Jim Rash, who will play the dean of MIT, a role he previously portrayed in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. Sacha Baron Cohen is also set to be in the series, but the character he will play has not been revealed by Marvel.
The new trailer wastes no time in plunging Riri right into action. The first scene has her in a closed pizza restaurant when the elevator she’s in locks with the doors closed and has two minutes to live. It is later revealed that this is all part of an “interview” (test) arranged by The Hood. Through the intercom, he ominously cautions her that she will be asphyxiated if she does not break into a box fixed to the floor of the elevator that has a gas mask in it. Riri declines and instead determines to come up with another innovative approach.
The Hood, however, is impressed with Riri, as he extends an offer for her to team up with him and do something “awesome” and “iconic.” A crime of some sort is the activity he has in mind. Riri is naturally interested and wants to show her capabilities and produce something “iconic.” But in a brief moment of doubt, she quickly acquiesces, although her friends express some concern. Natalie, Riri’s best friend, is particularly hesitant and cautions the teenager about trusting the Hood and the path he may lead her down. Her fear is likely not unfounded, especially after The Hood lets Riri know, “Anyone who has ever accomplished anything iconic in life has had to do some questionable things to get it done.”
The series has been described as an action-thriller. Riri will be trying to be a force for good while simultaneously building her skills. But to get there, she may find herself doing the “questionable” things her new friend alludes to. The audience will be curious to see just how far she’ll be willing to go.
Marvel has already confirmed the release date of the first three episodes of Ironheart. On June 24, 2025, they will premiere on Disney+. The other three episodes will be released weekly until the season concludes. A second season has not yet been announced, but if the first one is a success, it is definitely on the table. In the meantime, there is a chance to check out the trailer and a new behind-the-scenes featurette to give fans an even closer look.
