Strange New Worlds S3 Unites Beloved and New Characters
Fans of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have finally been given their first look at the upcoming third season of the Paramount+ series. It’s been several months since a brief teaser trailer first appeared for the next installment in the show’s saga, and the official trailer for Season 3 has been unveiled, landing just over a year before Season 3 is set to premiere on Paramount+.
Paramount+ recently announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 will premiere on Thursday, July 17, 2025. New episodes will drop every Thursday through Thursday, September 11, 2025, a total of 11 episodes. The trailer, first teased by Variety, was revealed on June 7.
Season 2 wrapped up with the Gorn attacking a Federation colony world that the Enterprise was on to explore and help settle. In the ensuing chaos, the Gorn attack the Enterprise, and several crew members, along with some other survivors, are taken hostage. Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is then left with a choice to either obey Starfleet orders to retreat or try to save the hostages and face almost certain death. Of course, Pike, being Pike, takes the former option, setting the scene for Season 3.
In October last year, a small snippet of the next season was shown during New York City Comic-Con. The footage seen was taken from the premiere episode and picks up right where the second season finale left off. It gives a few more first looks at the high-stakes space battle in orbit of the Federation colony world, a trademark of the show to date, against the Gorn and the large colony world itself.
The trailer, of course, picks up on that and more. Fans will get to see the conclusion to this conflict, but also a whole host of new and strange adventures, not to mention dangers. The next chapter for the Enterprise will still be under the leadership of Captain Pike, but the crew has not seen the last of their old enemy. While Season 3 will give the crew their moment of redemption, they will also be tested by a new nemesis who will challenge their trust, values, and everything they stand for.
Fans can expect a lot more diverse storytelling for Season 3 of Strange New Worlds, as it’s been reported that the show will include some faith-based episodes, service-and-duty episodes, and even some romantic, comedic, and mystery episodes. Variety also reported that Season 3 will break the mold by being able to also being considered “genre-shifting” as well, which hasn’t been possible in other Star Trek series.
The entire main and recurring cast is on board to return for Season 3. Star Trek fans will also be happy to know that Cillian O’Sullivan has been added to the cast to play the role of Dr. Roger Korby. Korby was first played by Michael Strong in Star Trek: The Original Series. In Strange New Worlds, Korby is an archaeologist who is a specialist in medical archaeology and is Nurse Christine Chapel’s (Jess Bush) long-lost fiancé. An unexpected return is only going to cause a bit of chaos, to say the least, in the crew dynamic, especially for Chapel, who now has a new love interest in Spock (Ethan Peck).
Season 3 also marks the return of guest stars Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt, the latter of whom will be taking on the role of a Vulcan in the upcoming season. In the Season 3 trailer and its preview of new episodes, several stories are teased, which will allow for this mixture of genres, including action-packed missions, softer and more comedic character moments, and the unfortunate (and all too relatable) mishaps of a science experiment gone wrong.
In the one standout moment, fans are treated to a brief introduction to one James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) as he takes the reins in the captain’s chair for a moment (pun intended). It’s not immediately revealed what he has to do in the season, but it’s quite clear that it’s going to be an event that will change him as much as it will cement his place in Starfleet. Pike explains to Kirk the importance of leadership before giving Kirk the responsibility of command of the ship for a few minutes, saying, “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.”
The moment cuts to Spock and Oswalt’s Vulcan character in a science lab, where it is perfectly juxtaposed by Spock attempting to explain and give a lesson in the Vulcan greeting of a “high five.” First,he successfully high-fives the Vulcan, only to do the “too slow” move as the Vulcan asks him to try to go “down low.” The Vulcan is confused, asking Spock, “Why would you do that?” To which Spock simply and with complete sincerity replies, “Because you are too slow.”
Premiere Date and Release Schedule
The third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will premiere on Paramount+ on Thursday, July 17, 2025. New episodes will then be released weekly every Thursday until Thursday, September 11, 2025. With 11 episodes confirmed, it’s a near two-month run that’s sure to keep fans on the edge of their seats.
Season 4 has already been renewed and will be the next season of Strange New Worlds to air after this next round of adventures in space. Strange New Worlds has managed to captivate both older Trekkies and new fans alike with its “well-executed blend of episodic storytelling, strong character arcs, stunning visuals, and the sense of Star Trek adventure.”
