Jurassic World Rebirth Introduces Quetzalcoatlus and the Worst of the Worst

Universal Pictures released the latest trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth yesterday, putting a cap on the latest film in the Jurassic World series before it enters theaters in the United States over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. The movie, which arrives on July 2, 2025, is a reboot of the Jurassic World franchise and returns to the park’s research island of origins. With its sights set on a rare, brand-new dinosaur virus with the potential to cure millions, the film will see Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and company returning to Jurassic Park to launch a classified rescue and extraction mission.

Jurassic World Rebirth is the fourth film in the Jurassic World sub-franchise and the seventh installment in the Jurassic Park franchise, which kicked off with Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park in 1993. Gareth Edwards, who previously directed the 2014 Godzilla reboot, is on board to direct the film. David Koepp, who wrote the original Jurassic Park and the 1997 sequel, The Lost World, has returned to the franchise to write the screenplay for Jurassic World Rebirth.

In the official synopsis, the planet has become a much less dinosaur-friendly environment five years on from the events of Jurassic World Dominion. What remains of Jurassic Park has become an inhospitable desert, and the remaining dinosaur population has been forced to retreat to the only places left on Earth that match their ancient ecosystems: near the equator. On a tropical island, three tropical island megafauna — the largest dinosaur on land, sea, and air — reside in stasis with genetic material locked inside them. Genetic material which could be the key to unlocking a miracle, disease-busting drug.

Scarlett Johansson stars as Zora Bennett, who is on a secret mission with a team of specialists to rescue the animals’ genetic code in this sequel to Jurassic World Dominion. But when their mission collides with a family vacationing in a boat that is boarded by a dinosaur-in-the-water, things go from bad to worse. The surviving family member becomes stranded on a deserted island, home to a Jurassic Park research facility, where they discover things are much darker and more sinister than dinosaurs.

Meet the Team, the New Killers

The full cast is a who’s who of Hollywood names, with the film starring Scarlett Johansson as Zora Bennett and Mahershala Ali, who is co-leading the mission team. Rupert Friend is also on board, as are Jonathan Bailey and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. Luna Blaise, David Iacano, and Audrina Miranda make up the children in the shipwrecked family as the children of Manuel Garcia-Rulfo’s character. Rounding out the cast are Bechir Sylvain, who is on the team with Johansson and Ali; Ed Skrein in an unknown role; and Philippine Velge, who also appears in an undisclosed role.

The second trailer, released back in February, uses a lot of the same footage and themes as the first, so fans who may have missed the second trailer will still see a lot of things they are familiar with. The new trailer opens up on the extraction mission, with a worker wearing a hazmat suit trapped in a lab with a T Rex. He’s eventually swallowed by the predator, screaming for help that comes too late. That’s just a taste of the action fans can expect. Jurassic World Rebirth is all about just-in-time escapes and pacing its reveals, with plenty of expected dinosaur attack scenes to go around.

Fans of the series will recognize the setting from the original Jurassic Park film as the research island in Costa Rica. In addition to dinosaurs, which were also featured in Jurassic World and Jurassic World Dominion, fans will get to see the return of the iconic raptors and an entirely new aquatic dinosaur species: the mosasaur. Audrina Miranda’s character even mentions it in the trailer, referring to the island as home to “the worst of the worst.” In her research on the island, Johansson’s character, Zora, works to classify which dinosaurs are the most volatile and which might be more tame, if such a thing even exists.

Jurassic World Rebirth has all of the hallmarks of classic Jurassic Park films, even though it’s supposed to be resetting the continuity of the franchise. Coming back to the park’s original research island is a callback to the series’ roots, and new predatory dinosaurs are the kind of unexpected threat that keeps things fresh. Fans can look forward to an A-Team-style operation with a diverse group of specialists led by a ragtag and morally ambiguous leader, a woman who happens to be Johansson. The blending of organic, natural disasters with high-concept science was never more poignant than during the series’ third entry, but it’s there nonetheless.

The trailer has set up some expected escapes from dinosaurs, including sprints through dense jungles and hiding places in sunken wreckage. There’s also an attempted theft of a pterosaur egg, probably a Quetzalcoatlus northropi, which the character in the trailer describes as “a flying carnivore the size of an F-16.” Jurassic World Rebirth opens in theaters on July 2, 2025.
