With the forthcoming hybrid supercar, Corvette ZR1X, which combines old-fashioned muscle with modern electric power, Chevrolet is about to challenge American performance standards. Originally teased at the official ZR1 launch, the ZR1X is not only the most powerful Corvette ever built but also a car designed to challenge the elite of Europe—Ferrari, McLaren, Porsche—at a far more reasonable price point. Under the Hood: Where Electrical Precision Meets Raw Power
The same twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 found in the ZR1X forms the core of the machine. On its own, it produces an incredible 1,064 horsepower (783 kW), but that’s only half the tale. With a front-mounted electric motor added by the ZR1X, the overall system output is shockingly 1,250 hp (919 kW).
Drawn from a 1.9 kWh battery pack upgraded from the one used in the Corvette E-Ray, that electric motor consumes With 26% more charge capacity, the new battery enhances performance—especially during constant acceleration. Up from 160 hp in the E-Ray, the front motor today produces 186 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque.
All-wheel drive made possible by this hybrid arrangement lets the ZR1X launch from 0–60 mph in under two seconds. The front axle disconnects following 160 mph (257 km/h), turning the vehicle into a rear-wheel-drive missile to lower drag at high speeds. Chevrolet has confirmed that the ZR1X can attain a top speed of 233 mph (375 km/h)—the same speed hit by the ZR1 during a test run in Germany with extra ballast added to simulate hybrid weight.
Stopping, Equilibrium, and Driveability
Stopping power is quite important given this much speed. Alcon provides GM’s first-ever 10-piston calipers, coupled with 16.5-inch continuous-weave carbon-ceramic rotors. Under testing, the brakes controlled a peak 1.9 G deceleration as the car dropped from 180 to 120 mph at the Tiergarten corner of the Nürburgring.
Even with the extra weight—up to 500 pounds more than the Stingray Z51—Chevy engineers made sure the ZR1X stayed agile. Revised software allows the hybrid Corvette to sustain 1 G of cornering and longitudinal force at the same time, so enabling it to be as capable in curves as it is on straightways.
Essential were the improvements in the software. The E-Ray suffered with oddities including uneven front motor behavior and reverse torque steer under regeneration. Engineers changed the stability and traction control logic of the system to guarantee perfect performance of the ZR1X under all circumstances.
Usability, Features, and Modes
Along with performance-oriented settings like Endurance and Qualifying, the ZR1X will feature a complete suite of drive modes including standard choices like Tour and Weather. Perfect for track use or overtaking, a new Push to Pass capability lets drivers release all 1,250 hp at once for brief bursts.
Not expected, though, is Tesla-level electric range. Like the E-Ray, the hybrid system of the ZR1X is developed more for performance than for efficiency. Under electric power only, it can probably cover 3 to 5 miles (5–8 km) at speeds less than 45 mph.
Electronic limited torque in first and second gears shields the drivetrain from shock loads. At this level of power, traction—not horsepower—is the restricting element.
The ZR1X will be offered in coupe and convertible forms; the latter is expected to weigh close to 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg). Performance standards are still sky-high though.
Although pricing is unknown, it will probably be more than the $174,995 base of the ZR1 and still drastically undercuts European hybrids with comparable specifications.
The ZR1X is, all things considered, a milestone—the best representation of performance, tech, and design Chevrolet could produce.
